Don't Look Down.....

"Don't look down, look straight ahead at eye level.  Take a full 30" step forward and let nature take it's course."  

This is what my Marine Corps drill instructor said to me so many years ago as I stood at the top of the 60" tall rappelling tower.  To be honest, she added some colorful interjections as she stood on the ground shouting up at me.  

This moment comes to mind again today.  These are the words that keep playing out in my head over and over again as I sit here this morning typing out this announcement to share with you all.  I feel like once again, I am standing at the edge of that tower and it's time to take that full 30" step forward.

By now, you all are wondering..."OK, so what is the big deal?"  or thinking "Get on with it Nancy."  Let's do that now...

Six years ago, after being prodded by a couple of friends, I went onto a not very well known website called Etsy, opened a shop and put a single doll up for sale.  I didn't really think much about it at the time, I logged off and went to bed.  

The following morning, I woke up to a message in my email notifying me that I sold something and a sweet message from a mama in Australia who cheerily said, 

"Yay!  I just bought the first ever Dragonfly's Hollow doll!  Cheers and best of luck to you going forward."  

From then on, we all know the rest is pretty much history...I would make one doll at a time and put them in the shop...they would sell and I would make more.  

Time kept moving, I enlisted the help of family and friends and DFH grew.  It kept growing and moving in this forward direction, taking on a life of it's own.  It's been an awesome ride, to say the least.

There have indeed been bumps in the road, mistakes made as well as good decisions, bad decisions and amazing opportunities to touch the hearts of so many precious people.

About two years ago, I started chatting with my sweet friend Mel Scamuffa.  I told her if DFH were ever to grow I would want to do it in a way that helps other folks to grow and enrich their lives...I would want it to make a difference for others.  That was when the seed was sewn for this very moment.

You see, as you grow a business, there is always pressure to grow...grow more, grow bigger.  The pressure comes from all around.  I have done a lot of thinking about the direction that is best for DFH to take.  There have been lots of discussions and debates about the whole subject.  We have had numerous shops contact us to wholesale our items, even had discussions with a buyer for FAO Schwartz.  We just never felt comfortable with going that route.  It just did not fit with our philosophy of making a difference in people's lives.  It just did not seem to fit at all. 

So what is it we intend to do, you ask?  Well, we have decided that if DFH is to ever grow any more than it has so far, it will only happen with all of you.  That is why we are officially inviting you all to join our team and become a consultant for DFH.  

That's right, you read correctly...as of today, DFH is officially taking on consultants to partner with us.  

Like I said, the only growth we want to see is growth where we are enriching the lives of others...making a difference in real people's lives.  

We are opening up a limited number of slots at a time.  Each new consultant will be an independent business person...this is YOUR business endeavor.  You will make it be whatever you want it to be.  We will be your support,  your encouragement, your community so to say.  

How will it work?  Well, it's not much different than many other such organizations.  You hold in home parties, have a good time and show off the awesomeness that is DFH.  Take the orders and send them to us.  We then fill the orders, and ship them back to you.  As the consultant, you would then make sure everything is right and then distribute the items to your customers.  We have an online forum for you to go to for support and encouragement.  You can call us or email us with questions.  Basically, our job is to support you and your business.  Our super awesome friend Mel has agreed to come on board and help lead our troop of consultants.  To help come up with ideas and to encourage.  She will be heading up the forum.

 Now, this is all new.  It has never been done before in this sort of way, so I will be honest with you...we are heading into uncharted territory.  There will be bumps in the road, there will be changes made to things...additional things added.  As we progress, we will talk with you and as a team we will guide this thing together.  This will be our combined endeavor. 

We are limiting the number of consultants we will take on at first...then continuing to add members bit by bit.  

So, we are inviting you to join us on this wild ride.

I'm feeling kind of energetic after getting over my recent bout of illness :)  Due to that, I have decided to offer 8 custom slots to be made by the end of May 2014.

Once these are sold out, there will be no more.  

These are the ONLY planned customs for 2014....There are no plans to offer customs again after this.

We receive a lot of messages from folks asking us for tips or pointers on how to make their own dolly for their kiddos.  It was because of these queries that we began the whole Mama Made line a couple years back.

Well, we are no longer offering Mama Mades, so we decided to share our info publicly on our Youtube channel.  

We will share each video one by one, each week.

A Whole New Website...wooo hoooo!

We have a new website!  

Some of you might have noticed it over the weekend...it went live on Friday and we sneak peeked it onto Twitter for an advance sneak peek.

We are super excited...its been a long time since we revamped things around here :)

You will notice a couple of positive changes...

First, it's easier than ever to view our galleries.  The first group, of course, being the weekly preview group.  Then the rest are broken down by the type of doll or set they are.

Next, our updated Calendar will make it easier to update you on what is happening and when.  You will also notice, at the bottom of the page, we have installed an easy time zone converter so those of you outside of the US and our time zone will have an easier time figuring out what time our uploads are.

Discussion Forum

This is where we will be moving our Team DFH FB page as well as our Mama Made FB group page...don't worry, it will be over time but by the end of the month, both of those pages will be migrated to our discussion forums.  It's no secret that FB has undergone many changes recently that have inhibited our ability to interact with our followers.  We would like to control our own communication so we feel as though it is better for us to move our own discussions away from FB.  

No , we are not leaving our main business page...that will remain exactly how it is.  No worries on that. Just our more personal chit chat and non business related things will be moved over to our forum.  

Speaking of interaction...you will also notice we have a Newsletter sign up right on our page.  We are in the process of migrating our huge list of folks who have signed up for the newsletter from our shop to our Mailchimp list of folks who have signed up thru our FB link.  We will soon be able to send out one Newsletter to our entire group of folks who have signed up.

Snuggles...

We decided to make a few changes to our Snuggle Doll bodies...

First up...body style

We decided we wanted their bodies to be extremely floppy...like our Sprites.  So, we have switched over to a Sprite-style body.  The arms are still the same as they were, the only real change here is the fact that the legs are attached to the torso exactly like our Sprites, JW and Pixies

Next....Snuggle Dragon changes...

We decided to switch out the wool felt parts for cotton velour. 

And finally...our newest Snuggle Doll...Snuggle Bugs!

These guys speak for themselves :)  Named after the nickname I used to call my now 16yo son when he was a wee babe, Snuggle Bugs are just that :)  

They have dragonfly wings and little antennae attached to their heads.

We're pretty happy with the changes...we think they make our Snuggle Dolls even better...we are pretty sure you will agree.

New DFH Baby Dolls

Time to introduce our newest addition to DFH :)

Babies!!

This is a total revamp of our original baby doll from a few years ago. 

They are 15 inches tall.  

Their arms and legs are extremely floppy and are stitched with our special style joints that allow for a full range of movements.

...and yes, they have butt cheeks :)

These sweet babies are so super snuggly. They just beg to be snuggled when held.

They will have hair made into a baby cap of either mohair boucle, brushed mohair yarn or mohair teddy bear fabric.  Each baby will come wearing a cotton velour diaper, a sleeper and a sweet little matching beanie to keep their sweet little heads warm.

We will begin offering these in our weekly RTG doll upload on Thursdays, starting this week.

We are pretty excited to start offering these guys to you all.

Mama Aurora is wearing a beautiful dress and hand crocheted shoes with wooden buttons.

 

Wee Baby Nova is a 7" tall DFH Wee Baby

She has knee and elbow dimples as well as butt cheeks :)

Like her mama, her skin is golden interlock knit.  She has brushed mohair for her hair with rainbow highlights to match her mama.  

She comes wearing a cotton velour diaper and rainbow knit sleeper.

Baby Nova loves to wear her baby like her mama wears her.  She brings her teeny baby with her everywhere.

Baby Nova has a little over the shoulder bag to carry her baby in and mama Aurora has a hand knit sling with a large wooden button to carry Nova.

In the past, we have put Special Edition dolls up for auction...to shake things up a bit, we have decided that this time, we would place them for sale in our shop online.  They will be available today at 12:00 pm central US time.

A Whole New Level of Details :)

I have been spending a lot of time dreaming up new ideas and then working away to find ways to bring them to life...

One of the first things was to design a larger size body.  I wanted it to be very slender and floppy, like our Jewelwings, Sprites and Pixies, but also much taller.  To be closer to the configuration of a 10-12 year old child...long spindly legs and arms with large feet.  As I played around and came up with the style, I realized this larger size gave me more creative freedom to play around and create new ways to bring more little details to them.

This is what I came up with...introducing, our newest body.  

She stands 17" tall.  Her arms and legs are thin and long.  Her body is slender as well.  

Next, it was time to play around with the little details.  

I wanted to figure out a way to make her arms and legs bend naturally at the joints.  I also wanted it to look pretty.  This is what I came up with.

She not only has knee and elbow dimples...they are also functional, acting as moveable joints. 

It also has the added bonus of giving her leg and arm definition.

Her legs and arms can now bend freely but still look pretty when they are straight.

As for other small details....

How about right and left feet.  

...and of course butt cheeks 

These details will be on all our large size dolls going forward.  This means if the doll is 16" or bigger...he or she will have these same details.  We will not be adding these to our other sizes...Jewelwing, Sprite and Pixie. 

I cannot tell you how excited I am to bring have been able to dream this up and finally bring it all to life.  Hopefully you all will agree these are some awesome additions.

February 2014

It's been a while since I had the time to sit down and put together an update of all that is going on.  I have been trying to find the time to do this, it seems for oh so long.  OK, so since I have the time this morning...better get started...

We are off to a great start this year...Things are steadily rolling along.

Many of you have already met ZiZi.  She was brought on to help run the shop for me so I can have the freedom to design and create.  She makes sure things keep rolling at the shop and things get done on time.  This is no small task, trust me :)  When someone is out, or does not get their work done, she has to step in and finish it.  She is pretty amazing for taking this all on.  Over time, you all will get to know her better...as she gets more settled in her role, she will begin to be more active online.  You all are gonna love her.  She's pretty wonderful.

We added a few new sewing mamas to the team.  They are still training, so it will take a few weeks before they are totally up to the task,  it takes a few weeks and a lot of sewing to be ready to make items for us.  Based on what they have done so far, I can say they are both extremely talented sewers.  They will be fantastic additions to Team DFH.

On the book front, the paperback copies have all bee shipped out.  As for the hard cover copies, our publisher ended up being a bit behind on time estimates and it has added a couple weeks to our finish date.  Right now, we are on track to have them received, all printed and ready to ship out, by the 27th...we are sorry for the inconvenience.

If you follow along on the FB page, you are already aware that we are working on new items to add to our offerings each week.  With the addition of ZiZi to the team, I look forward to being able to design some new items as well as make some alterations to a few existing items so we can add them one by one.  Wait till you all see what I have in store for you :)  I am pretty excited.

We have some other really big things coming down the road...but I will save those for another blog post :)

For now, it looks like I have covered all the things I needed to go over today.  It's now time for me to get to work :) You have yourselves a wonderful day...

Mystical Mama Gaia and Wee Baby Tahra

Deep in the forest dwelling amongst the moss covered rocks and earthy tree roots, Mystical Mama Gaia lives with her sweet baby Tahra.

Mama Gaia is a guardian of the forest.  She watches over all manner of flora and fauna.

When an animal or plant becomes ill or weak, she is there helping to nurse them back to health.  When a new youngling is born, she is the first one present to welcome the new babe to their world.  She takes her tasks seriously as she loves all the living creatures in charge.















Her task is not an easy one especially for a mama of a wee one.  As we all know, wee babies are quite a task all on their own. There are always things that must be done for the forest as well as Wee Baby Tahra.  So she does what many other mamas do every day...she does the best she can each day.














Mama Gaia was born with a dragonfly birthmark and wee baby Tahra seems to have been born with it as well.  Perhaps this means she too will be a forest guardian one day when she grows up.









Wee Baby Tahra is a busy little one.  She loves to snuggle with mama.  She always has a great big smile.  She love to coo and make sounds as though she is talking to you.  It is apparent that this little one, some day will have lots and lots to say.

So, how, you ask, does a sweet earth mama care for her youngling while also carrying out her very important forest tasks?  Well, she wears her in her leaf sling of course.

She can bring her everywhere she goes.  Wee Baby Tahra can nap while mama works.  When she is awake, Mama Gaia can wrap the sling around her back and Wee Baby Tahra can ride along and see everything mama is doing.  She can feel and hear mama all around her all the time and mama knows her sweet baby is safe and cozy.

Some day, Wee baby Tahra will be too big for the sling.  She will want more freedom to roam the forest...away from mama but not too far at first.

There is no doubt that Mama Gaia will find some way to watch over her little when that time comes.  Until then, she will enjoy wearing her wee babe.  She will enjoy this precious time to snuggle and cuddle her as much as she can today and each day.

Be A Secret Angel

Its been a while since I sat down and took the time to write up any sort of real update about what is going on behind the scenes here at DFH.  I guess there is no time like the present.

I am so humbled by the growth DFH has seen over the past five years.  I know I have said it before, but  it bears saying again,  when I first opened up my little online shop five years ago, I had no intention to make it into a full time thing.  My intent was to quietly make one doll at a time and put it up for sale.  If it sold or not did not even matter.  

Well, we all know how things have gone since then.  

What started as a one woman crafty endeavor with no real aim at being anything has blossomed into a full grown business with employees and a studio space.  Looking back, I honestly do not know exactly how we got here.  It clearly has taken on a life of its own and its growing at its own pace.  Its all so very exciting. 

All of this growth has made it necessary for Robert and I to stop thinking of DFH as a side crafty thing and start realizing that it is indeed a full grown business complete with real world obligations as well as amazing future potential.  DFH has grown up.  Our tiny little Etsy shop has taken on a life of it's own, growing into something that can and will indeed be around for many, many years to come.  

Of course with everything there is a not so fun side.  The legal side where you have to incorporate, insure and trademark.  The financial side where you calculate cost and productivity and sustainability.   The logistical side where you have to admit that things are way beyond the capability of one person doing it all any more. We also have the very real, employer side of things where you realize you have an entire team of folks who depend on DFH to help support themselves and their families...and you, as their employer,  are obligated to make sure they can count on your business to help them to continue to do this.

It's a little overwhelming when you stop to take it all in.

Our DFH team has grown.  We now have 19 folks, with a few more in training, all working together to make each and every doll each week.  Some of these folks work in the studio and others work from home.  Its amazing to see it all come together each week like magic.  These ladies are not just employees, they are like family.  Many of them have been a part of our lives since way before DFH ever existed.  Our children have grown up together and are, to this day, close friends with each other.  We wouldn't have it any other way.

Robert and I have spent quite a bit of time over the past several weeks discussing all of this.  We have a great friend who is helping us out with navigating all the legal aspects of owning and organizing this business of ours, as well as plotting out the future of DFH.  We are coming to terms with where we are, and laying the groundwork for where we want to be.  Sometimes it has been amazing and like a dream and other times it has been so stressful I have wanted to sit down, give up and cry.  

I guess you could say raising DFH to what it is so far has been very much like raising children.

We have been working towards smoothing out the rough edges, making things run more smoothly and efficiently.  Its all to make things better for us here at DFH and better for you.  

One of the first things you will notice is that from time to time, there will be a new voice on the FB page.  Many of you already know Shelley,  she worked with you on your recent customs.  She will be taking on a bit more of the page interactions...answering questions and such.  She is stepping in to help us out to give me precious time to be with my family as well as the space to create and design new things.  I will still be online quite a bit...most of you will never even know a difference.  All the same, I am extremely thankful for her help.  

We also have some exciting projects in the works...you all will know more about them as we get closer to their launch.  I promise that they will blow your socks off.  Your gonna love it.  I can't really say any more than that, I don't want to ruin the surprise of it all.  Suffice to say,  some awesome things are coming, so be sure to stick around.

In the meantime,  we will continue to make awesome doll after awesome doll for you each week.  We are committed to maintaining quality as well as keeping our pricing at a reasonable level where most folks can afford them.  We are aware that prices of handmade Waldorf inspired dolls has skyrocketed over the past year.  We do not intend to follow this trend.  We plan on following our own path.  As one of my favorite quotes by Ralph Waldo Emerson goes...  

"Do not go where they path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail".

We will be following our own path going forward...heading into uncharted territory.  We are all so happy you are with us on this journey.  

It's been an amazing five years,  here's to another amazing five years!  We would not have been able to get to this point without all of you, we cannot thank you all enough for all the support you have given us over the past five years.  Without you, we would not be who we are today.

Good morning everyone!

We hope you had a wonderful and relaxing long weekend...and were able to enjoy some down time with your family.

Its a whole new week with lots of awesome things gong on here at DFH!

This week is kind of special for us all, we are celebrating our 5 year anniversary all week this week.  Five years ago, on September 2, 2008, I opened up an online shop on Etsy...the rest is history.

We will be doing lots of fun things to celebrate this week, so be sure to pop by and visit...you never know what will be going on.

We have a pretty wonderful group of dolls this week for you...once again, I think you all will be very pleased with what we have whipped up.

Update, August 2013

It's been quite some time since I have been able to sit down and take the time to write and let everyone know what's been going on behind the scenes here at DFH.  Well, I finally have that time, so let's get to it...shall we?

We are heading towards our 5 year anniversary...yep, on September 2, DFH will be exactly 5 years old.  Where did the time go?  So many things have changed since that day way back when...it's really hard to wrap my brain around it all.

Looking back, things were so intimate in those days.  I was able to spend countless hours chatting with mamas about dolls and orders.  I was able to create a bond with so many wonderful women.  Many of you are still here today so you know what I am talking about...it was a different time.  As we all know time moves forward and things change...its just the natural order of things.

I think of DFH as a child of mine.  As with all children there naturally comes a time when the child grows beyond the parents and starts living a life of its own.  I can see this happening with DFH.

Today we have an actual brick and mortar studio space.  We also have a whole team of ladies working away every day.  Its pretty scary and pretty wonderful at the same time.  These ladies depend on DFH to help them support and feed their families.  They love that they are working, making an item whose sole purpose of existence is to make people happy.  We love that we are able to give these folks jobs that pay a decent wage for their work.  This is not a common thing these days.  They work from home with nurslings and in the shop.  These ladies are pretty dedicated.

I guess this brings me to a point I wanted to make...change and growth is natural and good.  Our team of ladies (and guys)  are all dedicated to doing the best job we can.  We all want you to be happy with your dolls and critters.  This is our number one goal.

Everyone is working hard all the time.

Jess has worked assembling doll bodies on multiple occasions while she was at the hospital with her toddler who had bout after bout of life threatening allergies for his entire first year.  She spent many overnights quietly stitching away.

Lindsay has literally scalded her hands many times dying wefts trying to get the most perfect shade of color she can so she could help make a custom as close to perfect as she possibly could.  She has come in on weekends and worked instead of spending time with her family.

Shelley, works pretty much all the time...she has a nursling and other children at home.  She keeps your conversations straight and she even compiles the details in such a way so that I can see them and easily understand what we need to do.  This is no small feat.  She remembers minute details and reminds me of them when I forget one or two.  She has sat and crocheted wigs, both custom and RTG, while her sweet baby snuggled up in a wrap on her.  She and I have spent countless hours texting back and forth about details of customs...every day of the week...yes, including weekends.  Just ask our families.

Robert works a full time job in IT for a major International bank.  He sometimes works straight thru the night on projects, communicating with people all over the world.  On top of this, he spends countless hours organizing the shop.  It is his organizational skills that helps keep things flowing.  He makes sure the right doll gets to the right place with the right details.

You might be asking...so then Nancy what exactly is it that you are doing since all these other folks are working so hard.  I work every weekend for several hours each day sewing faces and finishing up customs and special dolls.  I can tell you that it is indeed me and me alone who sews every face on a DFH doll.  That has still not changed...and when it does, we will let you know....promise.  On top of sewing and designing, my week is filled with trying to schedule, organize and coordinate everything and everyone.  If one of the ladies is unable to finish something they are working on...I am the one who steps in and finishes that job. Anyone can tell you that standing and trying to talk to me usually involves my phone going off every few minutes...sometimes in rapid fire one after another.  It is not unusual for me to be holding 4-5 conversations at one time.  This is exactly why you do NOT want me being the one who organizes your custom details.  All of this leaves precious little time for my own family...who we do still homeschool.

Each one of us does a particular job that is necessary...jobs that I simply cannot do on my own anymore.  

I have said it before but it bears saying again...we are all dedicated...we only want to do a great job for you...we only want you to be happy.

That said, no one is perfect...there will always be times where something goes wrong or doesn't quite end up being exactly how someone envisioned it.  No one can be perfect every time...we, after all are only human.  It happened when it was only myself making dolls...it will happen with a team too.  

Issues will pop up from time to time...that we all know.

When one does, all we ask is that you talk to us.  We only want to make you happy.  Let's not be quick to anger...we are only human.  No one is perfect and no one has ever lived who has never made an error.  Give us the chance to correct any issues before you get angry or irate.   If you send a message and do not get an immediate response...hold on a wee bit and give us a chance to get back to you...sometimes we are busy with our families and sometimes we are busy trying to work things out for another customer...rest assured we will get back with you.  Promise. We do not have a call center in India where folks can answer and respond 24 hours a day...what we have is a tiny team of hard working folks here in the US who occasionally do need to sleep or rest.

Growing is not an easy thing to do...these ladies are here to help me make you the doll you always wanted.  There is a learning curve to communicating with folks.  Give us the time to get that down....and please a little patience and the odd kind word would be extremely welcome.  We are going to continue to grow.  We are all excited to see where this journey leads us.  Each new step will bring it's own unique challenges...we ask you to please be patient.

Know this...everyone here are DFH wants nothing more than to make sure you are happy with the dolls and critters we make.  We take great pride in our work.  Yes there will be glitches...as I have said, that is only part of being human.  Please be patient and if there is an issue, simply communicate openly...then give us a chance to work it out.

We cannot thank you all enough for being along for this wild ride we are on..it will be fun to see where this takes us.
